Camp Tall Timbers, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia, was acquired by founder Jerry Smith in 1970. Initially rebranded as Camp Teen Town, it catered to 12-16 year olds. In 1990, Jerry became the sole owner, changing the name back to Camp Tall Timbers and expanding the age range to 7-15.
Jerry’s son, Glenn, was deeply involved with the camp from 1970 to 1984, serving as a camper, counselor, and director. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Glenn pursued a career in real estate management. He returned to camp as Director in the early 1990s and, five years later, purchased Camp Tall Timbers.
Glenn and Jerry maintained an excellent working relationship, with Glenn overseeing all camp operations while Jerry assisted with kitchen management and staff hiring. Jerry remained active at camp into his late 80s, passing away in 2022 at the age of 95.
Over the years, Glenn has been supported by many dedicated individuals in running the camp. Emma Knox, who started as a camp counselor in 1998 and is now the assistant director, is one of those instrumental in helping maintain Camp Tall Timbers’ reputation as one of West Virginia’s premier summer camps.
