Essential Job Functions:
Riding program
- Assist in the planning and instruction of a creative, safe and fun horseback riding program.
- Assist in drawing up lesson plans that meet camp requirements. These should incorporate daily and sessional schedules.
- Evaluate individual campers in their riding abilities to ensure each program is delivered effectively and safely.
- Apply clear and directive communication to your campers, making them aware of your expectations.
- Deliver progressive horseback riding activities, using your knowledge of arena facilities, and available trails.
- Be informed and implement all camp safety rules. Report to your Head Horseback Riding Instructor with any concerns.
- Assist in camp activities with passion and enthusiasm. Be an active leader and a good role model. Do the best you can every time!
Facility and Equipment Management
- Assist in the daily care of the horses and equipment including tack, stalls, etc.
- Be observant of the horses’ health needs, behavior and tack needs.
- Assist with the daily check of facilities and equipment for safety cleanliness and good order.
- Assist in packing all materials and close down of horseback facilities at the end of the season.
Role Model
Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures. Set good examples all of the time to staff and campers in regard to teamwork, using initiative, being proactive and going the extra mile!
Other Duties
- Assist in planning and participate in other camp activities as assigned such as evening activities, special events (in particular those in the horseback arena) and other camp functions.
- Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
Equipment
Qualifications and skill requirements
Current certification in horseback riding, or equivalent. Must be able to obtain or hold current First Aid Certificate/CPR. Demonstrate a proactive and positive approach to work all the time. Documented training and experience in horseback riding.
Physical Aspects of the Job
- Be able to work within a team of campers and staff and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff where appropriate.
- Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Ability to endure prolonged standing, bending, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching
- Necessary eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
- The normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.
- Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
