Position Purpose:

To provide surveillance and supervision ensuring a safe environment for all waterfront (lake and pool) activities. To assist in the Management of the physical operation of waterfront facilities and equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

Supervision
  • To provide surveillance during all waterfront activities to maximize the safety of all activity participants.
  • To prevent and manage all injuries.
  • Provide rescues where needed, utilizing first aid, CPR and other emergency management services as required.
  • To understand and implement an appropriate response to changes in water/weather conditions which may adversely affect waterfront activities, using good judgment.
Assistance
  • To assist waterfront instructional staff in program areas such as swimming and boating by ensuring staff and campers are adhering to safety procedures.
  • To assist in the delivery and supervision of all waterfront activities and special events as directed.
Facilities and Equipment
  • Be responsible for daily checks of all waterfront facilities and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair.
  • Be responsible for the daily cleaning of all waterfront facilities of debris and hazards.
Role Model
  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set good examples all of the time to staff and campers in regard to teamwork, using initiative, being proactive and going the extra mile!
Other Duties
  • Assist in planning and participate in other camp activities as assigned such as evening activities, special events (in particular those at the waterfront) and other camp functions.
  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
Qualifications and skill requirements
  • Current certification in lifeguard training or equivalent Current First Aid/CPR
  • Prior experience of similar duties at a waterfront similar to a camp.
  • Training in and experience of waterfront activities offered at camp.
  • Desire and ability to work with children in an outdoors waterfront environment. Knowledge and prior use of powerboat as used for water rescues.
Physical Aspects of the Job
  • Be able to work within a team of campers and staff and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff where appropriate.
  • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to endure prolonged standing, bending, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching.
  • Necessary eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
  • The normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.
  • Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
