Responsible toHead Counselor

Position Purpose:

Responsible for the planning and delivery of field sports activities ensuring they are safe, fun and meet age/ability levels of all participating campers.  Responsible for the management and physical operation of the field sports facilities and equipment.

(Field sports may include softball, soccer, baseball, field hockey, lacrosse or others).

Essential Job Functions:

Field Sports Activities
  • Plan for, instruct and supervise a creative, safe and fun field sports program.
  • Draw up schedules that meet camp requirements and are progressive for campers of all ages/abilities.
  • Evaluate individual campers and assistant staff in their abilities to ensure each program is delivered effectively and safely.
Safety
  • Be responsible for implementing and overseeing all camp safety rules and procedures. Report to your Head Counselor with any concerns.
  • Assist in the implementation of field sports training to assistant staff, communicating to them clearly their responsibilities and your expectations.
  • Teach and assist in camp activities with passion and enthusiasm. Be an active leader and a good role model.
  • Do the best you can every time!
Facility and Equipment Management
  • Ensure field sports facilities and equipment e.g. bats, balls, nets, etc. are organized and appropriately set up prior to any staff training.
  • Teach and monitor the appropriate use of all equipment and facilities by both assistant staff and campers.
  • Be responsible for the daily checking of all facilities and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair, reporting concerns to your Head Counselor.
Role Model
  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set good examples all of the time to staff and campers in regard to teamwork, using initiative, being proactive and going the extra mile!
Other Duties
  • Assist in planning and participate in other camp activities as assigned, such as evening activities, special events (in particular those in the field sports area) and other camp functions.
  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
Qualifications and skill requirements
  • Documented experience in field sports instruction or documented training and experience in the variety of sports the camp offers.
  • Current First Aid Certificate/CPR.
  • Training and experience in teaching field sports to children.
  • Experience in setting up field sports equipment and management of the activities. Demonstrate a proactive and positive approach to work all the time.
Physical Aspects of the Job
  • Be able to work within a team of campers and staff and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff where appropriate.
  • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to endure prolonged standing, bending, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching.
  • Necessary eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
  • The normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.
  • Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
